WELLINGTON go into their last three rugby matches of the season still not sure whether they will be playing in Regional Two South West next winter.
Of the three games remaining, Wellington play away to bottom side Truro on Saturday, March 8, knowing that victory might be enough to avoid relegation. At the moment, three teams could go down, but much depends on what happens in other divisions.
Certainly, they will be confident following their fine display away to third-placed Tiverton where they were desperately unlucky to lose 18-13.
They did pick up a bonus point, however, which keeps them five points clear of Teignmouth who are lying tenth, with Newton Abbot and Truro below them.
"We controlled the last 20 minutes but couldn't get a score," said Wellington's head coach Graham Dawe afterwards. "We started the game really well but they got around us twice in the first 20 minutes.
"But it was good to have some experience in the side - the likes of George Hodgson, Ash Harney and Ollie Price. And Toby Redwood did well along with Johnny Clist.
"We need to pick up where we left off against Tiverton. We need to keep foccused and prepare. It's a long trip down to Truro, that's the thing - two hours on a coach.
"But the lads know they've got everything to play for. After Truro, we've got to play Crediton at home (Mar 22) and Cullompton away (Apr 5).
"All three games are crucial. It's a big season for the club and we want to finish in style."
One of Wellington's biggest problems this season has been non-availability of players and injuries which has meant it has been difficult to field a settled side. And, of course, vice-captain George Hodgson had been missing since before Christmas, thankfully now back, while skipper Danny Lee is ruled out for the rest of the season.
Wellington 2nd XV, who beat Somerton 41-29 at home in Counties Three Somerset South in their latest match, play away to second-placed Bridgwater & Albion 2nd XV on Saturday, March 8.
Wellington are lying eighth in the table but could finish as high as sixth if they play well in their last three matches. They complete their season with games against Cheddar Valley (away) and Hornets (home).
Meanwhile Wiveliscombe, who beat bottom side Bideford 52-20 at home in their latest match, will also be looking to end their season in Counties One Western West in style.
They have another home game on Saturday, March 8, when they play Redruth IIs who beat them 22-14 in Cornwall last November. Much will depend, of course, what side Redruth will be able to field.
Despite a lean spell recently, Wiveliscombe are lying sixth in the table, having won ten of their 19 matches. They are six points behind Saturday’s opponents Redruth.
Pirates Amateurs are the leaders of the division, having won 16 of their 19 fixtures, while Barnstaple are second, four points adrift of their title rivals.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV will go into their away match against Burnham 2nd XV on Saturday, March 8, with a one-point lead at the top of Counties Four Somerset South.
Wiveliscombe are battling it out with Martock for the title and the two sides meet at The Rec on Saturday, March 22, in what could be the 'decider'.
