WELLINGTON 2nd XV bounced back to winning form with a 41-29 home success against Somerton in Counties Three Somerset South at the Athletic Ground last Saturday.

Perfect conditions led to an entertaining and high scoring game between two teams wanting to entertain.

Within minutes of the kick off and in front of a sizeable crowd, Welly managed to get the ball out wide to Tom Slade who scorched round the defence to score in the corner for an unconverted try. Somerton hit back straight from the kick off, scoring their own unconverted try.

The rest of the first half was a tense affair. With Welly giving a number of penalties away, leading to Somerton scoring a converted try, before Charlie Higgs managed to chase a Will Brewer kick to score in the corner. Wellington found themselves 10-12 down at the interval.

Playing down the slope in the second half, Welly’s superior fitness in the pack started to pay off, spreading the ball wide whenever they could. It resulted in Will Brewer and Jon Long scoring a try a piece, which were both converted by Jon Long.

Somerton scored their next try from a penalty lineout, before Brewer strolled through the defence from a penalty and Tom Slade again scything through the Somerton defence to score his second.

The final five minutes of the game saw a total of 3 tries - tThe Somerton number 9, with a fantastic individual try, followed by Lee Wadham from close range and Somerton’s number 9 adding another and respectability to the score line.

This was a great effort by all involved, keeping the crowd entertained for the full 80 minutes.

Wellington remain eighth in the table, four points behind the next placed side Hornets. Castle Cary top the table having lost only one of their 18 matches.
