WITH just one more match to play in the Wellington Bowling Club Weekend League, two teams are both in the running to be league champions. Woodpeckers are top at the moment with 30 points while Southsiders are just one point behind on 29.

Next weekend, in the last matches of the season, Woodpeckers will take on third placed Skylarks and Southsiders will be up against New Rollers to see who will be top of the tree.

This weekend the Woodpeckers were up against the Allstars. Janet Lovell, Ed Norris and skip Steve Lovell's Woodpeckers knew that they had a fight on their hands because Allstars had already won six of their matches leading up to this game.

Alan Mark, Ron Elston and skip Debra Beasley's Allstars played a very good game but had to play catch-up and Woodpeckers took a close win, 15 shots to 9.

Second placed Southsiders were drawn against the Ninchers who were doing well in their first season. Jane Hayes, Steve Bradnum and skip Ian Hollingsworth's Southsiders found themselves behind early on but they picked up the pace and took a 10 – 7 lead at the halfway point.

Ray White, Vera White and skip Martyn Beed's Ninchers were only two shots down after ten ends but an all important four shots in the 11th end ensured a close victory to Southsiders 17 – 12.

The third match was between third placed Skylarks and New Rollers who were lying in fourth. This was a close game from the start. Chris Johns, Diana Dagg and skip David Dagg's Rollers took an early lead but struggled to hold on to it. Eileen Stewart, June Anderson and skip Ian Stewart's Skylarks played steadily and consistently to pull ahead and win in style 13 – 5.
