SUPPORTERS of Wellington can look forward to a feast of football with seven successive matches at the Playing Field, the first being against Tavistock in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League tonight (Wed, 7.30).
Although they have played only four matches, Tavistock’s young side have already impressed in their first season in the division.
Wellington, on the other hand, have struggled to field a settled team and find themselves on the bottom of the table.
“We have to turn things around,” said Wellington manager Clive Jones. “At the moment we’re in a hole.
“My position as manager is on the line. I don’t blame the players because I cannot fault their commitment.
“I have set a target of 12 wins this season - that’s one more than last season. At the moment we’ve only won one game, so we have much to do.”
Meanwhile, Wellington are expecting their biggest crowd for a number of seasons when they take part in the Toolstation League’s ‘Groundhop Weekend’ on Sunday.
The first team’s premier division match at home to Exmouth has been moved back a day, with a 2.30pm kickoff.
‘Groundhoppers’ are football supporters whose hobby is visiting as many clubs as possible.
Each season, the league stages a special weekend and this is the first time Wellington have been involved, hosting the last of seven games - one after another from Friday night onwards.
Club secretary Jeff Brown said: “We are expecting visitors from as far afield as Norway and Germany, so it should be quite an occasion.
“Exmouth are also one of the best supported teams in the league which means it will be all hands to the pumps.”
Admission to the big game is £6 (all adults), under-16s free. Gates open 1pm.
Wellington Reserves, who beat Bow Amateur Athletic 5-0 at home over the weekend, are away to Thorverton in the East Devon Senior Cup on Saturday, while Hemyock are home to Exmouth Spartans in a top of the table match in the third division of the Devon and Exeter League.
Wellington A are away to Middlezoy Rovers Athletic in Division Two of the Invest Southwest Taunton Saturday League, while Wellington side Moortown are home to Butlins in Division One of the Keyline Somerset Sunday League’s Gardner Cup.
