WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, remain third in Division One of the West Country Drainage Services Taunton & District Saturday Football League, despite dropping points in a 1-1 away draw against Nether Stowey in their latest match
A combination of the pitch and the referee’s attachment to his whistle really stifled any creativity from either side.
Neither team were able to find a rhythm but both sides did defend well for most of the half. There were a couple of missed penalty decisions but not much to write home about otherwise.
Nether Stowey eventually broke the deadlock and scored a scrappy goal just before half time. Looking to get themselves back in the game, the Reds tried to break down the well organised Stowey defence but to no avail.
Both teams created a few good scoring chances but were unable to find the net. The Reds were temporarily reduced to 10 when they were given a harsh yellow resulting in a sinbin.
However, the visitors slotted into their usual 10-man formation and dug in. A late Jack Lewis throw flicked on by a Reds player resulted in a Nether Stowey own goal, leaving the final result all-square at 1-1.
The Reds travel to Alcombe on Saturday, April 12, having never lost to the West Somerset side. In fact, the Reds will be looking to make it four wins out of four against them this season.
Alcombe are currently second in the table, with the same number of points as Reds, both sides having played the same number of matches. Middlezoy Rovers Athletic have the same number of points, but have played two more games than their rivals.
Dunwear are the outright leaders of the division, having lost only one match all season.
