WELLINGTON A’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier Division in the Taunton & District Saturday Football League suffered a big blow when they lost 7-1 to runaway leaders Galmington on the all-weather pitch at Court Fields School.

Despite the scoreline, Wellington played some fine football, particularly in midfield, but could not put the finishing touches to some neat build-up play.

The Taunton side, who are favourites to win the championship, were always dangerous on the attack but Wellington’s young goalkeeper Riley Perry showed a safe pair of hands and made some outstanding saves. He certainly could not be blamed for any of the goals.

Galmington took the lead in the 18th minute and added to their lead from the penalty spot following a harsh decision on 32 minutes. And just before the interval Galmington made it 3-0 after taking advantage of a defensive error.

Wellington enjoyed their best spell just after the interval after Reegan Scotcher netted with a superb shot to make it 3-1 in the 47th minute. Only minutes later Jordan Sellick went close with a free-kick from just outside the penalty area.

If Wellington had scored again at this stage, the result might have been different but Galmington quickly made it 4-1 with a headed goal.

Wellington continued to try and play football against the league leaders but could not stop Galmington adding to their lead in the 56th and 60th minutes.

When Galmington netted their seventh in the 65th minute, there was a danger they might notch double figures. However, although Galmington were always dangerous on the break, Wellington saw plenty of the ball and prevented any more goals.

It was the only game played by Wellington’s three senior sides, with the first team fixture at home to Street in the Jewson League and the Reserves’ match at Lyme Regis in the D & E League called off.
