THREE fire engines were called to tackle a blaze at a derelict building in the Comeytrowe area of Taunton overnight.

Teams from Taunton and Wellington Fire stations were dispatched after fire control received reports of a fire at around 7pm on Monday, April 14.

Two vehicles were mobilised from Taunton and another from Wellington which was dispatched during the station’s drill evening.

Once in attendance crews confirmed a large derelict commercial premises well alight and got to work extinguishing the fire.

At 9.35pm, Taunton Fire Station reported that the derelict building had been completely destroyed in the fire.

They said: “Crews dampened down roofing sheets due to the construction of the building to prevent the smoke plume reaching local housing estates.

“Two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera were used to bring the fire under control.”

Avon and Somerset Police were also in attendance.

At 7.30am on Tuesday, April 15, the fire station reported that: “The majority of the building has now successfully burnt out, a few hotspots remain.

“Crews will attend the scene this morning to monitor the situation.”
