POLICE are investigating a reported assault outside the OneStop convenience store in Tonedale.
The incident, which took took place in the evening of Monday, April 7, is said to have involved several young girls who assaulted another teenage girl and pulled her hair outside the shop on Mill Stream Gardens.
A witness, who has chosen to remain anonymous, approached the Wellington Weekly News to say that the young girls were shouting and using abusive language outside the shop at around 7.15pm that evening.
The witness said: “The youths, which seemed to be mainly girls, were shouting and screaming foul language outside the shop and trying to barge past staff to enter.
“When members of the public intervened and tried to protect the shop and staff they started throwing the bakery crates at the shopfront glass.
“An innocent gentleman in his early 50s, I believe, tried to politely ask the girls to calm down and move on and was being very calm with them, to which they shouted abuse right in his face, were swearing and pointing their fingers in his face, and then spat at him.
“Such a disgusting thing to happen to someone who clearly tried to defuse these girls. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing.”
