WELLINGTON Wildcats are out of the Somerset Women’s Football League’s Chairman’s Cup after losing 3-2 at home to Wells City in the semi-finals at home on Sunday.
And not only were they knocked out of the cup but they suffered injuries to two of their key players - Player of the Day Bryony Sellick who sustained a broken foot, while Bianca Hamlyn suffered concussion.
Wildcats got off to the worst possible start, conceding in the second minute and were certainly second best in the opening moments. However, Wildcats were deservedly back on level terms in the 39th minute. Emily Ayers' fantastic freekick thundered off the crossbar into the path of Georgia Purdy, who couldn’t get a shot away, but was able to square to Ebony Sellick to smash home.
After the half-time team talk Wildcats came out with renewed belief and were soon ahead in the tie; a ball from halfway from Leah Morrell was met by Ebony Sellick with her back to goal, she held off the challenge from her defender before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
Wells got back on level terms in the 62nd minute and grabbed the winner in the 81st minute.
This weekend they are home to Ilminster Town Reserves. Kick-Off 2pm.
