WELLINGTON’S cricketers will be back in action this coming weekend, playing two pre-season friendlies.

The first team, which will be captained again this summer by all-rounder Aaron Campbell, will be playing at Minehead on Saturday, April 19. Campbell is unavailable for this game which means that new vice-captain Jacob Hurry will take charge of the side.

Wellington will also be fielding a mixture of second and third team players for a friendly at Ilminster on Sunday.

The club’s first and second teams will again be playing their home matches at the Playing Field which is now owned by Wellington Town Council, who have taken over the ownership from the Somerset Council this year.

The Wellington club’s head groundsman Des Campbell said: “We’re looking to raising the standard of the ground to how it used to be. It has been in steady decline for the past six years.”

Wellington has also said that it will be having another overseas player this summer and will be making an announcement shortly.

Wellington’s first team endured a tough time in the Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League last season, eventually being relegated after being promoted without losing a match the previous summer and establishing a record.

However, it was still a good experience for the younger players in the team who found themselves competing against some clubs who pay their players.

Meanwhile, the West Somerset Cricket League gets underway on Saturday, April 26, with a limited programme of matches.

Fixtures, April 26 - Division One: Bridgetown v Morebath, East Huntspill v Winsford. Division Two: Churchinford v Crowcombe, Roadwater v Stogumber. Division There: Cutcombe v Carhampton. Division Four (no matches). The league will be up and running with a full programme of games the following weekend.
