MORE than seventy members of Wellington Bowling Club came to the official opening of the green on Saturday afternoon.
Everyone dressed up in their best bowling clothes for an official team picture which was taken by club member David Dagg.
Every year one special person is asked to bowl the first bowl of the outdoor season. This year it was the turn of long time member, Win Courtney.
Win is amazing. She has been a member of the club for thirty three years and is still bowling to this day at the age of 94! Over the years Win has been Club President, Ladies' Captain, Ladies' Selector, Competition Secretary and many more positions which have supported the club.
After the first bowl had been delivered, the “Spider” competition was held. Everyone who entered had to put one foot in the ditch around the green and then bowl once at the jack in the middle. The person who put their bowl nearest the jack would win a special prize.
The prize was won by Trevor Jenkins. Trevor has not been with the club for very long but he beat everyone else to it on the day and at the age of 86 he proudly held his bowl aloft and went home with a special prize of a bottle of malt whiskey.
The afternoon continued with everyone joining in games against one another on the bowling green. Everyone was overjoyed to be able to play bowls outdoor again after the winter indoor season.
The club will be holding many friendly matches along with team league matches, competitions, an Open Day and many more exciting events through the summer. If anyone would like to take up bowls, contact Bowls Coordinator Graham Brown on 07917 451884 for six free coaching sessions.
