WELLINGTON made it three wins out of four this season with another excellent 2-1 victory at Brixham in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.
Manager Richard Cherry, in his second season as boss, was again without a number of players but his well-drilled outfit came from behind to take the points with a determined display.
After a cagey opening, the game sprang to life after 20 minutes after a low drive by Brixham’s Aaron Wellington came back off the inside of the post and the ball eventually went out of play.
The resulting long throw found its way inside the far post and into the net with Wellington adamant that no-one had touched the ball.
However, after referee Michael Lazarus had consulted with his assistant, the goal was given and credited to James Moxon.
Tangerines keeper Jake Viney then saved well from a free-kick while, at the other end, Mark Cornish – moved up into midfield for the game – saw a flicked header brilliantly pushed over by Josh Nicol in the home goal.
It remained 1-0 to Brixham at the break but Wellington started the second half brightly with Nicol denying Tom Burt before they drew level after 62 minutes.
Striker Jake Quick – back with the club after a season with Axminster Town – chased down a long pass, challenged by two defenders, and somehow managed to find space to clip the ball past Nicol.
Viney kept it at 1-1 with a superb reaction save eight minutes later and then Wellington stunned the hosts by taking a 73rd-minute lead.
A long throw into the box came out as far as Josh Lukins and the young midfielder pounced to drive a low shot into the net.
Brixham threw everything at Wellington in search of an equaliser but – just as they did at Buckland Athletic the previous week – the Tangerines defended magnificently to hold on for victory.
It was another excellent all-round team performance which set them up nicely for a testing trip to Barnstaple on Tuesday night.
Wellington: Jake Viney, Harry Scott, Jason Quick, Jordan Hayman, Ryan Hibbert, Oscar Albano, Josh Lukins, Mark Cornish, Tom Burt, Miles Quick, Jake Quick. Substitutes: Sam Towler, Danny Wordsworth and Kieran Bailey (all used).
Elsewhere Brislington made it three wins from their opening three league games with a 4-1 home victory over AFC St Austell who have not made the best of starts to the season.
Brislington's goal-difference of plus-15 enabled them to top the table with Bridgwater United, who will be making another big effort to be promoted this season, winning 3-1 at home to Welton Rovers to go second.
Street also maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 3-2 away success against St Blazey.
