WELLINGTON lst XV will be looking to build on their success at Burnham on Sea when they play their first home game of the season in Region Two South West - against Sidmouth tomorrow (Sat, 3p.m.).
Both sides won their opening games last weekend. Wellington were 47-24 victors at Burnham on Sea while Sidmouth won narrowly 27-24 at North Petherton.
“We looked a little rusty at Burnham in the first half which is understandable for our first game,” said Wellington’s director of rugby Bill Sherwin this week. “But we upped our game in the second half and played very well, particularly the front row who were up against a bigger and heavier pack.”
Having struggled to field a settled side for much of last season, it is unlikely that Wellington will be making any unforced changes tomorrow.
“Supporters will be able to see the England game against Argentina in the clubhouse after our match, while the France v New Zealand clash will be on Friday (this evening),” said secretary Ashley Colman.
Ironically, Sidmouth were the last team to visit the Athletic Ground, losing 36-24 on the final day of the season.
Wellington 2nd XV, who won 34-12 at home to Burnham’s second team last Saturday, are away to Chard 2nd XV in Counties Three Somerset.
Wellington, who thumped Plymouth Albion in the Devon Merit Under 18 League last weekend, play away to Exmouth tomorrow. Their big victory would have delighted the club’s management, particularly against such a big club.
Meanwhile Wiveliscombe, who put up a good fight at Kingsbridge last weekend before losing 28-21, entertain Paignton in Counties One Western West (3p.m.). The match at Kingsbridge could have gone either way. Paignton lost 26-12 away to Plymouth Albion Oaks in their opening game.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV, who drew 17-17 at home to Somerton, are away to Hornets 3rds
