WELLINGTON are through to the quarter-finals of the Somerset RFU Cup without handling a ball.

They were due to play Regional Two Severn side Weston super Mare on Saturday, November 2, but their rivals have cried off. Their opponents in the next round are Burnham on Sea, with the away tie scheduled for Friday, November 22.

Wellington’s head coach Graham Dawe said: “We would have liked a game this weekend. It is always nice to keep playing every week.”

Looking back on last Saturday’s defeat by Topsham, he said: “We lost it in the first 20 minutes, when we missed our tackles. In the end we could have won it.”

Wellington were 20 points down at one stage. The weekend break provides Wellington’s vice-captain George Hodgson with more time to recover from a bruised knee. Hodgson is a influential member of the side because he can play anywhere behind the scrum.

Because there is no match at the Athletic Ground on Saturday, the Ladies Lunch has been postponed. There is no league rugby for any of the local sides this weekend.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Wellington Vixens play on Sunday when they face Chard in NC3 (2.30p.m.). It will be their first ever home game in the league.
