WELLINGTON commenced their new season in the Devon U18 League with a home game against Plymouth Albion - and enjoyed a splendid 50-17 victory.In near perfect conditions for running rugby, Albion won the toss and elected to play up the slope. Wellington were first out the blocks with a mazy run by wing Tom Slade scoring the opening try. Tom Heggerton stepped up to kick the conversion.
With Wellington taking the game to Plymouth using the slope to their favour centre Jon Long broke the defence and raced over for the second try. The extras were added by Tom Heggerton. After some sustained pressure hooker Lucas Jenkins drove over for the third, the extras added by Heggerton.
The Wellington lads used their forward dominance to drive hard into the Plymouth defence, one such foray allowed the ball to be spread wide at speed to Slade who raced in for his second try, Heggerton added the extras . Plymouth were awarded a penalty and a quick tap and pass to the loose head prop saw him dive over for Plymouth's opening try wide out. The extras were missed. On the half time whistle Wellington were 28 to 5 ahead.
The second half followed the same theme and from some fine driving forward work the ball found its way to Slade who ran in his third try of the day. The extras were missed . A similar passage of play saw Slade sprint over for his fourth try wide out . The extras were again missed .
Wellington then sprang back into life and in loose play centre Jon Long chipped over the defence gathered his own kick to run in his second try of the day. The extras were taken by Heggerton.
This was to be the final act of the game and the final whistle went seeing a score line o Wellington dominance on the day.
Plymouth then re-grouped and showing great spirit , broke down the middle and just short of the try line was illegally tackled . A penalty try was awarded . Plymouth began to get into their stride and applied a lot of pressure on the Wellington defence and with a well worked move saw their inside centre race over to score under the posts with the two extra points were added.Wellington U18s are back in action in their second league game away to Exmouth tomorrow (Sept 9).
