WELLINGTON Rugby Club's chairman Gareth Hodgson has admitted this season has been 'difficult' for the club's two senior sides.
In his programme notes for the match against Crediton a fortnight ago he said: "There's no doubt we've had a difficult 150th season on the pitch with mixed availability, injuries and other factors playing a part. However, I'm looking forward to seeing both sides finish strongly on the drier pitches of early spring."
His comments certainly had an affect on the pitch where the first team gained a splendid 26-24 win over Crediton, in their last home match of the season in Regional Two South West.
Crediton are a good side as their place in the division would suggest, but Wellington matched them throughout and could have won more decisively if they had taken their scoring chances.
But even though luck did not appear to be always on their side, they managed to spring a surprise against Crediton who are certain of finishing runners-up to new champions Topsham who have been the outstanding side in the division.
It was a good weekend for Wellington's two senior sides with the 2nd XV winning 43-17 away to Cheddar Valley in Counties Three Somerset South.
Meanwhile, Wellington lst XV will be back in action after a fortnight's enforced break when they play their last league match of the season away to Cullompton on Saturday, April 5.
Wellington, of course, will again be without captain Danny Lee who has been missing since before Christmas and recently underwent a successful neck operation.
Wellington go into the match at Cullompton having secured their status in Regional Two South West following their win over Crediton.
They are lying ninth in the table, with Teignmouth, Truro and Newton Abbot in the bottom three positions with their situations next season not clear.
Wellington will be looking to complete the season's double over Cullompton, having beaten their opponents 28-20 at the Athletic Ground on the opening day of the season.
However, it was a match which could have gone either way with the Devon side taking a 14-5 lead early in the second half and staying ahead until late in the match when Wellington scored two unconverted tries - through Mikey Taylor and vice-captain George Hodgson, the second in added time.
Topsham end their season with a game at Okehampton, hoping to pull off their 21st win in 22 matches.
Fixtures in Regional Two South West for Saturday, April 5: Crediton v Truro, Cullompton v Wellington, Newton Abbot v Tiverton, Okehampton v Topsham, Wadebridge Camels v North Petherton, Winscombe v Teignmouth.
Wellington 2nd XV also play their last league match of the season - at home to Hornets 3rds XV in Counties Three Somerset South on Saturday, April 5 (3p.m.).
Wellington go into the game in seventh place, 16 points behind the next placed side Weston super Mare. Castle Cary are certain of finishing champions.
*It's then on to the 150th year celebrations for the club at the end of the month.
The big event is on Thursday, April 24, when the club stages its Gala Dinner with Dean Richards, Peter Winterbottom and Mike Teague being the main guest speakers. This is followed by a charity event on the 25th, a Rugby Day on the 26th, and the minis and juniors presentation day on the 27th.
