THIRTY-TWO members of Wellington Bowling Club travelled to Torquay for their annual tour, organised again by Steve Lovell.
They played six matches against another touring team and local sides. There was great excitement on the first morning as the Wellington teams won overall, all be it by only two shots. No one could remember when this had happened before.
However, they were brought down to earth in the afternoon as they lost overall. Then on day two they won again, this time by a very creditable score of 51 to 34.
The next morning they played a side from Plymstock, winning two of the rinks and losing two with an overall score of 48-46. Then in the afternoon they played a mixed local side and lost overall 36-49. The winners of the daily prize were Suzanne Worth, Alan Every, Janet Moore and Mike Connors and the wooden spoon Brian Wombwell, Alan Mark, Monica Carter and Angie Moore.
Wellington next played a local team Plympton in the morning. Wellington were on good form again and won two and lost two but this time won overall by 51 to 34. Wellington were up against a strongTorquay/ Paignton side in the afternoon and went down 35-50. The day’s prize went to Janice Thorne, Monica Carter, Tony Weston and Ken Brown and the spoon to Suzanne Worth, Di Dagg, Mike Connors and Alan May.
On the final day a very strong side comprising players from local sides Victoria and Kings took on Wellington. Despite trying their best Wellington lost 39-57, only winning on one rink. The afternoon went slightly better when they met the Plymstock team again and won one, drew one and lost two. This time the prize went to Steve Lovell, Janet Lovell, Alan Mark and Eddie Dilley. The last wooden spoons went Suzanne Worth, Di Dagg, Arthur Carter and Chris Thorne.
