DESPITE dominating the game for long periods, Wellington Reserves saw their winning run ended by Colyton who beat them 2-1 in the Premier Division of the Devon & Exeter League at the Playing Field.
After three successive away victories, they welcomed back leading scorer Jack Bryant from injury and both he and Ben Evett had early opportunities. But it was Colyton – beaten 5-1 on their own ground by Wellington only two weeks earlier – playing up the slope who took the lead, scoring after keeper Rob Hall had blocked their first effort.
The hosts drew level on the half-hour when a free-kick from the right was knocked back across goal for defender Sam Bryant to net from close range only for Colyton to regain the lead just before half-time. A ball was flicked on for their striker to race clear and shoot past Hall.
The second half was one-way traffic with Wellington launching repeated attacks on the visitors’ goal. But Jack Bryant saw a header spectacularly turned over by the keeper and another header come back off the foot of the post. However they could not find the back of the net again as Colyton gained sweet revenge for the big home loss to the rivals.
It was not a good day for the club with the A team going down to their 12th defeat in 16 matches in the Premier Division of the Taunton & District Football League when they lost 6-3 at home to West Somerset outfit Porlock.
Jordan Sellick snapped up two of the goals for the A team while Jayden Hawkins scored the other. Defeat left Wellington second from bottom in the table with only four more league games to play.
Wellington’s first team game away to Oldland Abbotonians in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League was called off because of a waterlogged pitch and has now been rearranged for Tuesday, March 11 (7.45p.m.). It was the second postponement for Wellington whose home game against Saltash United the previous weekend was also a victim of the bad weather.
Shock of the weekend in the Premier Division was the 1-0 home win by St Blazey over the leaders Clevedon Town who went into the game with a five-point lead at the top of the table.
It came only a week after St Blazey were humbled 7-4 by Welton Rovers who had lost their previous 28 matches and had failed to gain even a single point.
Second-placed Portishead took full advantage to close the gap to only two points after they hammered third-placed Brixham AFC 6-2 at home. The top two teams are now well clear of the chasing sides.
Buckland Athletic dropped two crucial points when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Torpoint.
