WELLINGTON Town ended their league season on a high with a 2-1 home victory over Kingsdown Knights, securing their highest-ever finish in Division Two of the Under 12 section in the Taunton & District Youth Football League.
The young Wellington side started brightly and took the lead after 13 minutes when Charlie McAlpine produced a moment of magic, lofting the ball over the goalkeeper from 20 yards. Their dominance continued and, in the 28th minute, Felix Emes doubled the lead with a composed finish into the bottom corner after breaking through the Knights' defense.
Kingsdown Knights, lying one place below Wellington in the table but some points behind their rivals, fought back and pulled a goal back on 40 minutes, setting up a tense second half. Wellington had chances to extend their lead, but Cass Letten saw his one-on-one effort saved, and Mason Talbot’s curling 25-yard strike narrowly missed the target.
Wellington’s defence held firm, with Man of the Match Freddie Andrews putting in a commanding display at the back to ensure his team saw out the win. The result caps off a memorable season for Wellington, who finish third in the league - their best-ever finish - marking a significant achievement for this young squad.
Such has been the interest in Under 12 football that the club are looking to recruit players to form a second team at this age group next season.
A club spokesman said: “We have two volunteers who have agreed to coach the team and need to find a few more players to field a second side.”
