WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, have moved up to third in Division One of the Taunton & District Saturday League - without kicking a ball over the weekend.

Reds were due to play a rearranged match against Exmoor Rangers - instead of Bridgwater Grasshoppers who were involved in a cup tie - but their opponents have pulled out of the league.

“Exmoor have been struggling to raise a side - they have lost some players - and we gave them a couple of weeks grace in the hope they could carry on,” said Saturday League secretary Gary Best. “It is disappointing because we don’t want to lose any sides. But they simply could not carry on.”

The league table has been altered to exclude Rangers, while Reds now trail the leaders Middlezoy Rovers Athletic by only four points - and they also have four matches in hand. Reds’ other rivals for the title and promotion are Dunwear United who are lying second.
