WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, maintained their bid for promotion in Division One of the West Country Drainage Services Taunton & District Saturday Football League, with a 6-1 win over Norton Fitzwarren at the Richard Huish College, Taunton.
Norton, however, were the first to score, taking the lead with a well-worked goal against the run of play. However, Reds quickly hit back to score goals through Jake Quick (2), Paulo Borges and Aaron Hill to go 4-1 up at the interval.
Paulo notched his brace in the second half before captain Arron Campbell completed a convincing win for Reds who gained revenge for a defeat by Norton earlier this season.
This win enabled Reds to go sixth in the table, and they have games in hand on most of the teams above them. Middlezoy Rovers Athletic are tops with 32 points but have played 15 matches, five more than the Reds who are ten points adrift.
Unfortunately, Wellington Reds’ game on Saturday, February 1, fell victim of the wet weather following heavy rain throughout the week.
Meanwhile, Wellington A’s hopes of avoiding relegation in the Premier Division suffered another blow when they slumped to a 4-2 away loss to Bridgwater Wolves.
Defeat left them second from bottom with Minehead Reserves, who won 3-2 away to Wembdon United, now only four points behind them, both sides having played 15 of their 20 matches.
At the other end of the table Galmington maintained their position at the top with a 4-2 home success against Stogursey. Wembdon, in second place, beat North Petherton 3-1 away but are still 11 points behind the leaders who have played three more fixtures.
Wellington A are home to Porlock at Court Fields School on Saturday, January 8 (2.15) while Wellington Reds are home to Bridgwater Grasshoppers at the Playing Field (2.00).
