DESPITE a spirited display, injury-hit Wellington went down 71-22 away to table-toppers Topsham in Regional Two South West.
Victory enabled the Exeter side to maintain their 100 per cent record - now stretching to 17 matches - and to complete the season’s double over Wellington, having won an entertaining game 34-21 at the Athletic Ground in late October.
Wellington, captained again by Ollie Price in the absence of Danny Lee and George Hodgson, both injured, fielded a side well below full strength but still managed to collect a bonus point for scoring four tries.
It was never going to be an easy game for Wellington who found themselves trailing 20-5 after 20 minutes with Charlie Higgs scoring a try for the visitors.
Topsham snapped up another try before Billy Brooks closed the gap to 26-10 with Wellington’s second try of the game.
The Exeter outfit extended their lead to 40-10 before Will Hodgson made a 50-yard break to go over for a splendid try.
Leading 47-15 at the interval, Topsham turned the screw with two more tries to go 59-15 up before Hodgson went over for his second five-pointer following a marauding run, with Wellington earning a bonus point, and the try being converted.
However, Totnes finished as strongly as they started and added to their score to complete a good day at the office for the division’s outstanding side.
It ended another entertaining match between these two teams with Topsham showing quality in both games. However, it was Wellington’s 11th defeat of the season although they remain ninth in the table.
There is only one match in the division this coming weekend - Truro play at home to North Petherton.
Wellington do not play again until Saturday, February 15, when they entertain North Petherton (2.30).
