WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, faced Chilcompton United in the Somerset Intermediate Cup at the Playing Field and gained a fine 2-0 win over the Mid-Somerset League outfit.
However, for the second week in a row, the Reds started slowly, with the poor state of the pitch not helping. The Reds’ keeper Luke Vernon made some important saves to keep the game level but just before half time, Darren Mace broke down the right, whipping the ball in to Jack Lewis who headed home to put the Reds 1-0 ahead.
The Reds started the second half better than the first, but Chilcompton kept pressing, although the home side’s defence held tight. With about 10 minutes left, Jack Lewis bagged his second of the game with a tidy finish from the edge of the box, sending the Reds through to the next round of this county competition.
The Reds now have four games in the first division of the West Country Drainage Services Taunton Saturday League in two weeks as they look to try and catch up on games played. Winning all four would put pressure on the teams currently above them who have played quite a number of matches.
Meanwhile, Wellington A crashed to a 7-1 away defeat against stylish Staplegrove Reserves in the Premier Division of the Saturday League.
Wellington A, whose goal was netted in the first half by Matt Muggleton- Browning, now find themselves second from bottom with only Minehead Reserves, who have yet to pick up a win and have only two points, below them.
The gap between the first and premier divisions would appear to be quite big because Wellington are finding it tough going this winter after winning Division One last season and being promoted.
Wellington have no match this weekend.
