WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, maintained their bid for promotion in Division One of the Taunton Saturday Football League with a decisive 4-0 away victory over Wembdon Reserves.

Having previously beaten Wemdon Reserves 4-3 earlier in the season during a midweek fixture and knocking their first team out of the Rowbarton Charity Cup more recently, Wembdon were keen to try and get one over on the Wellington side.

The Reds started the better of the two teams and soon went ahead with Paul Pocock attacking a Jack Lewis cross and finishing well with a good header. Wembdon hit the bar twice in the first half but other than that goalkeeper Darren Mace was barely troubled.

The Reds doubled their lead with Lewis assisting again, this time Kaspa Brunu taking his chance and nodding the ball past the keeper.

Pocock snatched up his second before half time after - yes, you guessed it -another Jack Lewis assist.

In the second half, Wembdon never really troubled the Reds, who dominated in midfield and their defence dealt with anything that came over to the top with ease. Jack Lewis got his well-deserved goal half way through the second half and from then it was all about game management. Anything Wembdon chucked at the Reds was chucked back into the neighbouring field.

The Reds face Nether Stowey on Saturday, April 5 away in what should be a more competitive game for them.

The Reds will be soon turning their attention to their upcoming county cup semi final against Odd Down Development on the 19th of April.

Meanwhile, first division leaders Dunwear United continued to set the pace at the top of the table with a 2-0 away victory over title rivals Alcombe Rovers. It enabled them to go seven points clear at the top.
