WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, are through to the Taunton & District League’s Rowbarton Charity Cup.
They secured their place in the final - where they will play Staplegrove Reserves - after beating highflying first division side Wembdon 1-0 in a midweek match at the Bridgwater Academy.
The Reds went into the game as underdogs and had several late pullouts due to illness and only travelled with 12.
Wembdon played the better football early on but the Reds were organised and worked hard to snuff out any half chances that the Bridgwater side created.
A head injury about 15 minutes into the first half meant Reds were forced into a change. While Wembdon were dominating possession, chances were fairly even, with the clearer cut efforts falling to the Reds but neither side were able to make a breakthrough in the first half.
The Reds would have been the happier of the two sides at half time.
Reds brought Connor Sellick back on returning to their original starting 11. Much like the first half, Wembdon had more of the ball, but the organised Reds were happy to let them play in front of them and remained dangerous on the break.
Winning a corner early in the second half, Reds capitalised with the returning Luke Desave rifling home to put them one up. Wembdon rolled the dice and made a series of changes but the Reds stood firm. Wembdon thought they had equalised with about 10 minutes to go, but the striker was judged to have fouled keeper Luke Vernon after a good initial save.
Staplegrove Reserves easily beat Racehorse FC last week in the first of the two semi finals .
