WELLINGTON Ladies followed up their victory the previous weekend by drawing 2-2 at home against highflers Porlock Ladies - a team who had beaten them 11-0 early in the season - in Division Three South of the Somerset Women’s Football League.
The result marked their big improvement under a new manager and with a virtually new team.
Playing on pitch two at the Playing Field, Wellington started strongly but went behind after 15 minutes. Shortly after, striker Jade Pope received a short ball from Izzie Carpenter and managed to lob Porlock’s keeper to make it 1-1.
Unfortunately, Wellington defender Charlotte Holder was forced off with a knee injury just before half-time, leaving Wellington with no subs for the second half but they were determined to go back out and create more chances.
A ball down the left from captain Grace Keen to Ashleigh Grabham-White was the perfect opportunity for the player-manager to cut back in and make it 2-1 to the hosts.
Porlock took another opportunity to score, levelling things up and the last 20 minutes of the game saw lots of defending and counter attacking by both sides.
Wellington went a player down due to another injury but they were determined not to let Porlock score another and the game ended with a well-deserved point for the home side.
Wellington’s Player-of-the-match was Jade Pope for her goal, playing in two different positions and being strong in the middle. The ladies hope both injured players make a speedy recovery.
*Although they failed to improve on their sixth place in the division this was another very encouraging result against a team which has lost only two games all season.
Porlock stayed in third place but are only two points behind the team in second spot, Combe St Nicholas, and have two matches in hand.
Wellington are without a game this weekend, February 16.
