JUST two games would decide the last names to go through to the quarter-finals of Wellington Bowling Club’s Indoor Open Singles.
Rob Higgs took on the very experienced Mike Connor who has won this competition three times in the last twelve years. Despite this Rob fought back hard from being 9 -0 down to make it 9 – 9 after 11 ends but then Mike pulled ahead for a 21 – 13 victory.
David Sparks also had a big job on his hands playing against last year's Open Champion Phil Ellis. He put up a good fight and was leading 2 – 1 but Phil got down to some serious bowling to win comfortably 23 – 8.
So the quarter-final matches to be played, which are all likely to be well contested, are - Arthur Carter v Nick Channon, Steve Bradnum v Phil Ellis, Pete Nichols v Mike Connor and Steve Horrill v Ian Hollingsworth.
Meanwhile, four teams from Wellington Bowling Club set off at the weekend to play some friendly games against Tiverton Canal Bowling Club. There were a lot of new and inexperienced bowlers in the Wellington teams.
Despite all the odds, one Wellington team did very well. Pat Bridger, David Harrison, Tony Weston and skip Mike Copping pulled off an excellent win by 24-10.
Jacqueline Finney, Peter White, June Anderson and skip Clive Manning gave their opponents a good game before losing 21-10. Elizabeth Copping, Philip Hutchings, Pat Bridger and skip Alan Every tried hard but lost 31-7 and Trevor Jenkins, Paul Kelsall, Angela Moore and skip Lynda Manning went down 24-7.
