ON A wet and windy day in Bridgwater, Wellington United put up a spirited fight before losing 4-1 to Wembdon in Division Three of the Under 12 section in the Taunton Youth League.
Wellington were very much in the mix early on and held their own only for Wembdon to open the scoring after seven minutes. However, Wellington kept pushing forward and Jack McDonald equalised assisted by Harry Newstead only two minutes later.
Wellington kept the fight alive for the rest of the half with some good end to end football only to concede a second goal straight from a corner kick which found a Wembdon player’s head. Wellington conceded two very quick goals at the start of the second half.
Wellington came alive again and really took the game to their opponents and were awarded a penalty with the spot-kick hitting the crossbar.
Wellington fought on and created chances but were unable to capitalise on these.
The Wembdon coach commented on how Wellington have improved and Wellington manager Steve Newstead said: “This result really is testament to how far we have come as a newly formed team. Wembdon beat us 9-0 in our last game against them.”
