NEWBEES are second in the Wellington Bowling Club Men's League, close on the heels of Spoofers who are setting the pace at the top.

Coming in to their latest match against Hemyock, who are one up from the bottom of the table, they were not expecting much opposition.

How wrong can you be! Tony Drawert, Brendon Pring, Howard Barnes and skip Simon Connor's Hemyock side were in good form. By the seventh end they led by 7 shots to 5.

Geoff Stamp, Chris Thorne, Ken Brown and skip Mike Connor's Newbees had it all to play for.

By the eleventh end they were still lagging behind by four shots. Hemyock were happy with a 10 – 6 lead and they looked to have the winning of it.

But in the eleventh things suddenly went wrong for the Hemyock side. One of their bowlers accidentally nudged the jack to the side among four of Newbees bowls which changed everything.

Now it was ten shots each and there was only time for one more end.

All the pressure was on both teams but the Newbees pinched it with one well directed shot which gave them the match by 11 shots to 10.
