The Sam Sherwin Cup was played on a Sunday 5th March in front of a bumper crowd under clear skies and a firm pitch ideal for running rugby.
The day of rugby commenced with an exhibition game by Wellington RFC U11’s verses Wellington School U11’s which was avidly supported by a vocal crowd and the boys and girls involved relished the opportunity to demonstrate there rugby skills . At the conclusion of this game saw Wellington RFC U11’s take the honours.
The main game between Wellington RFC U18’s and Wellington School U18’s kicked off at 2.30 pm. Both sides had full squads and took to the field looking to play Barbarian style rugby to respect this special day.
The school were quickly out the blocks putting together some great phases of play really testing the Wellington lads defence , this created space allowing the school to score some well worked tries.
At every opportunity the two sides ran the ball with few penalties being kicked to touch, as the first half progressed the Wellington RFC lads started getting into their stride putting together some well worked phases of play which led to Mikey Taylor breaking free to touch down for a try which he converted.
The school showed there class with numerous plays meeting some stern defence which eventually resulted in some great tries which were converted.
The second half saw both sides throwing everything bar the kitchen sink at each other the school were first to score, before a penalty was awarded to Wellington RFC where the lads from a driving maul saw Ethan Wood dive in to score wide out, the extras were missed.
The final whistle went on an exciting game seeing Wellington School U18’s taking the honours by 45 to 12.
Later in the club Bill Sherwin awarded the cup to Wellington School on what had been a great afternoon of rugby to honour the memory of Sam Sherwin who played for both the club and school.
