A PLANNING application has been made by Wellington Town Council to replace public toilets in Longforth Road which were closed nearly two years ago after a car crashed into the building.

Planning agent Stephen Tapp, of Exeter-based Ravenslade, said the site was currently a hardstanding where the original toilet block was later demolished due to structural damage caused in the collision.

Mr Tapp said: “The council are committed to replacing the original toilets to meet the needs of the public.”

He said the plan was for a new, smaller building which would provide two unisex cubicles and an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities, plus a small storage room for council use.

A new parking space would be created next to the western side of the building for a council vehicle to give access to the store and for maintenance of the toilets.

Mr Tapp said a barrier would be built to the front of the building to prevent pedestrians or cyclists colliding with the outward opening door of the accessible toilet.

He said: “The new building footprint has a smaller overall area than the original public conveniences and it is intended the roof run-off will be connected to the existing sewer running adjacent to the site.

“Currently, the existing hard standing surface water run-off travels across the site to an existing road drainage gulley, which in turn connects into the existing sewer system.”

Somerset Council, which will determine the application, is asking for public comments to be received by November 15.
