LOCAL councillors have remained tight-lipped about plans which have been submitted to Somerset Council for the building of a new toilet block in Wellington.
The long-awaited new toilet block in Longforth Road has been discussed for many months by members of Wellington Town Council.
But the council’s planning committee felt it was unable to offer any unbiased comments when the application came up at its latest meeting on November 4 – as it would be discussing the authority’s own project.
So the councillors agreed to make “no comment”. This was probably the first-time they have decided against entering into a long discussion about the loos ever since the previous toilet block was deemed out of action after a motorist drove into the building in December 2022, leaving it unstable.
The building has since been demolished and the site has been cleared in readiness for the installation of a new modular toilet block which will be – if everything goes according to plan – put into place next year.
But Cllr Keith Wheatley said: “I have looked at the plans online and I thought we were going for a modular building rather than a brick-built building, but the photos look as if it is brick-built.”
Cllr Mike McGuffie allayed his colleague’s concerns that the council was going for the more expensive option – although he modular building comes with a £238k price tag.
“It is still a modular building, but with a brick-cladding,” he explained. A final decision rests with Somerset Council.
