WIVELISCOMBE gained a 34-7 home win over Penryn in their opening match of the season in Western Counties West.
Wiveliscombe, with two new faces in their starting line-up - player-coach Tom Pearce at flyhalf and Oliver Luxton in the centre - played up the slope in the first half and took the lead on 12 minutes with a well constructed try by their threes finished by full back Will Thorne which he also converted.
Dan Smythe-Moore finished off a good period of pressure by the home forwards to score Wiveliscombe’s second try. Penryn forwards were penalised at a ruck just before half time to allow Thorne to give Wiveliscombe a 15pts lead at the break.
Playing down the slope in the second half Wiveliscombe scored a third try through second row Rory Stone, whichy Thorne converted.
Penryn had good periods of play especially from their threes who looked to run the ball at every opportunity and were rewarded with a try from their captain and centre James Salisbury which he converted.
Wiveliscombe were desperate to score their fourth bonus point try and it came through Thorne which he again converted.
The game had a great ending for the home team with Pearce finishing off a good move to score a debut try.
