WELLINGTON provided a stirring performance on a particularly sunny afternoon before losing 35-21 at home to leaders Topsham in Regional Two South West.

The Devon side, with a 100 per cent record this season, appeared to be set for an easy victory as they swept into a 20pts-nil lead after 33 minutes with four unconverted tries.

But Wellington, far from heading for a big defeat, staged a fightback playing towards the clubhouse, scoring two tries which were converted by Alex Davey.

Regan Walker charged over for the first of Wellington’s tries and Cam Venn snapped up a solo try not long after as Wellington went into the break only 20-14 down.

Topsham scored a pushover try - again unconverted - before Wellington rocked the visitors with a try by Will Hodgson, with Venn almost scoring his second try, which was converted to make the score 25-21 to the Devon outfit.

Play swung from end to end before Topsham chose to kick a penalty, the ball hitting a post before going over, to make sure at 28-21 they could not lose.

Wellington were still in with a chance of drawing but Topsham ended any hopes of dropping points when they scored a try in added time which was converted.
