NEARLY 50 players took to the field at Plain Pond last Friday evening when Wivey Ladies hosted Bridgwater under floodlights. Both teams had big squad numbers and the game was played in great spirit and cheered on by a good crowd of more than 200 supporters.

An experienced and talented league side, Bridgwater showed their quality from the kick off and retained possession for the opening 15 minutes. The home side showed improvements in many areas of their game and defended their try line with some big tackles but Bridgwater ultimately turned the possession and pressure into well earned points.

The match was contested well and the home team made the visitors work hard for their points.

SCORE

WIVELISCOMBE LADIES 7

BRIDGWATER & ALBION LADIES 57

Wivey players were lifted when centre Jess Weaver broke through tackles and showed incredible pace to score, showing control and judgement to touchdown under the posts to enable captain Meg Wignall to kick the conversion.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and came close with Ruby Terry carrying hard to the line. One of the several sister combinations Immy and Summer Constance linked well and threatened out wide and ‘pocket rocket’ Emily Thorne made several darting runs.

However it was the visitors who added to their score line and the match ended 7-57, a massive improvement on Wivey’s first encounter with Bridgwater.

The Wivey match awards went to forward Jasmine Greenway who tackled and defended the try-line with determination and back of the match and Jess Weaver who is getting better and better with and without the ball.

Maisie Brammall was the coaches choice, playing her debut match at 12 and made some impressive ball carries.

Many thanks go to the referee Ben Branson from Bridgwater RFC, to Clare, Olly and Henry on the gate, to the kitchen volunteers and the growing number of supporters.
