SMEATHARPE Stadium was packed on Bank Holiday Monday for the annual Caravan Chaos event to end a very busy afternoon of short oval race action.
Enjoying the summer sunshine, the crowd lapped up the deluge of spectacular moments, none more so than when six drivers totally destroyed half a dozen caravans.
Liam Shipway of Taunton upended his caravan, and was temporarily jackknifed in mid-air, before spinning the front wheels to propel himself forward and right the caravan, while Shane Kennard of Dunkeswell saw his caravan disintegrate when he was attacked by Darren Morgan of Honiton, who went on to take top honours.
Teenager Callum Faulconbridge of Plymouth captured the English Championship for the non-contact Stock Rods at the end of a controversial race. Simon Bassett of Bodmin had led from the start, but in the latter stages, he was hassled and harried by Callum Hosie of Newquay. With a little more than three laps remaining, Hosie’s attack spun Bassett into a marker tyre. Hosie completed the race and took the chequered flag, but was penalised for the contact, and that saw him docked two places to third.
Harry Darby of Ipplepen took the Saloon Stock Car final, while the Formula Two Stock Car final went the way of Julian Coombes.
