WELLINGTON gained a dramatic 26-24 home win over second-placed Crediton in Regional Two South West, the winning points coming from a try and conversion deep into injury-time.
It was only Wellington’s seventh victory of a disappointing season - but it ensured the home side will again be playing in the division next winter.
Wellington, unlucky to lose away to Tiverton three weeks ago, showed they are a threat to any side in the division when they can field a full-strength side. They scrummaged well throughout the game but lost more than their fair share of lineouts.
Welington, playing towards the clubhouse end in the first half, enjoyed more possession early on in the match but it was Crediton who broke the deadlock with a converted try after 16 minutes.
Wellington had a ‘try’ disallowed before the outstanding Will Hodgson scored an unconverted try eight minutes later.
Crediton took advantage of a poor lineout by the home side to score an unconverted try to go 12-5 up after 28 minutes - a lead they held until the interval.
However, Wellington were back on level terms only five minutes into the second half through a try by Ollie Price, which was converted by Danny Goverd.
Wellington came under pressure after this score and Crediton went 17-12 up with a try which was not converted - before the home side went ahead for the first time in the game with another try by Hodgson in the 65th minute, which was converted by Goverd.
Now 19-17 down, Crediton regained the lead in the 73rd minute with a converted try to make it 24-19.
But with time running out quickly, Wellington refused to be beaten and Liam Phillips popped up to score a five-pointer to level the scores with Goverd kicking the conversion with the final play of a thrilling and absorbing game.
