FOR their final rugby game of the season, Welly Super 2’s welcomed Hornets to the Athletic ground - and gained a convincing 51-10 victory.
Fielding a very strong side and playing down the slope in the first half, it took only 10 minutes for Welly to get on the score sheet. From a scrum in their own half, number 9 Ben Fowler broke free from the base of the scrum and fed centre Evan Greening. The ball eventually went wide to Tom Slade who scorched around the Hornets defence to score near the posts, allowing Jon Long an easy conversion.
Welly Super 2’s plan was to get the ball wide as quickly as possible, to make the most of the exciting young back line. However, it was Hornets who scored an unconverted try next.
Just before half time Welly upped the pressure and the running game, resulting in both Tom Slade and Ashton Cottrell scoring fantastic individual tries. Captain Andrew Bellamy converted Cottrell’s try with the last play of the half.
From the start of the second half, James Brackenbury profited from some lax defence to score a try, conversion missed. Next on the score sheet was Evan Greening, who managed to pirouette through the Hornets defence to score a converted try.
The Welly pack were now dominant, and the large Hornets forwards were starting to tire in the heat. This started to create gaps out wide, Charlie Higgs making the most of a kick through by captain Bellamy, scoring in the corner.
Hornets did score a solitary try in the second half before Welly scored 3 more tries, Brackenbury scoring his second which he converted. Jon Long kiced through for Fowler to score and the final score was snapped up by Greening at the end of the game. Final score 51-10. A great finish to a good season.
