DESPITE fielding a side well below full strength, Wellington ended a run of four successive rugby defeats with a hard-earned 29-21 home win over second from bottom Truro in Regional Two South West.

However, Wellington had to come from behind twice and did not clinch victory until late in the game following an unconverted try by Toby Redwood.

Wellington, who were missing the likes of Liam Phillips, Ash Harney, George Hodgson, Alex Davey and skipper Danny Lee, red carded against Tiverton, led 12-7 at half time following tries by Charlie Higgs and Cam Venn, the second being converted by Danny Goverd.

Truro hit back to take the lead within a minute of the second half when Matt Symons scored a try which was converted by Josh Anderson.

But the visitors could not hold on to the lead for long as Wellington, playing towards Corams Lane, regained the lead with tries by Will Hodgson and Chris Batts, with Goverd converting the second.

Now 24-14 up, Wellington conceded another try when Luis Powell powered over and Anderson added the conversion points.

But Redwood snapped up Wellington’s fifth try as the home side gained only their fourth league victory.

With so many players unavailable, Wellington called off their 2nd XV game at Bridgwater.
