ON A glorious sunny day, Wellington 2nd XV travelled to Bridgwater with a bare 15 to take on the host club’s counterparts, a team riding high in Counties Three Somerset South - and put up a very spirited display before losing 41-22.
Within two minutes of kick off, Welly was awarded a scrum which Bridgwater stole against the head, a few passes later and Bridgwater crossed for their first try of the game, which they subsequently converted. Playing against the breeze and defending valiantly, the Welly side tried to stem the tide of tries. However, by half time it was 29 points to 0 to Bridgwater.
In the second half Welly Super 2’s took the game to Bridgwater, with scum half Ben Fowler scurrying through the defence to put the first points of the half on the board, the try being converted by Will Brewer.
Bridgwater then hit back with a try of their own before Ben Fowler again crossed the whitewash after a quick tap penalty and solo run from the Wellington 22!
Welly Super 2’s then went down to only 13 players after a couple of injuries. Remaining focused and competitive in all areas, Welly continued to play running rugby, resulting in Ollie McCallum scoring a scintillating 50 metre try in the corner, after a clever chip through by makeshift centre Leslie Lewis.
Bridgwater scored their final try of the game, before debutant Harvey Hayman scored a brilliant team try, diving over in the corner for an unconverted try just before the final whistle. The final score was 41-22 to Bridgwater. Although, this was an incredible performance by the Welly Super 2’s, down to 13 men for most of the 2nd half!
Bridgwater remain second in the table while Wellington are in eighth spot.
