WELLINGTON find themselves continuing to hover above the relegation zone in Regional Two South West after losing 25-17 at home to North Petherton who completed the season’s double over their rivals.
Wellington’s head coach Graham Dawe blamed ‘basic errors’ for his side’s defeat by Petherton. “It was the same old story,” said Dawe. “We made mistakes and found ourselves playing catch-up rugby”
Fortunately for Wellington, all three sides below them in the table - Teignmouth, Truro, and Newton Abbot - lost which leaves Wellington in ninth position in the 12-team division, with a six-point cushion between them and the next placed side Teignmouth.
“We are not sure how many will go down - it depends on other regions,” added Dawe.
Meanwhile, Wellington are without a match this Saturday, February 22, and do not play until the following weekend when they are away to Tiverton, who are lying third and very much still in the promotion race. Wellington went down 66-10 when the sides met at the Athletic Ground in November in a match in which they were very much second best.
Wellington 2nd XV, who had to call off their away game against Tor last weekend, also have a blank weekend before playing at home to Somerton in Counties Three Somerset South on Saturday, March 1.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV will be in action this weekend when they play home to Tor II in Counties Four Somerset South (2.30). Wivey trail the leaders Martock by nine points but have two crucial games in hand. Wiveliscombe 2nds play Martock at home on Saturday, March 22, in what is likely to be a title decider.
Wiveliscombe Ist XV are without a first team game this weekend but will be chasing the season’s double when they entertain Bideford in Counties One Western West the following weekend. They beat the North Devon outfit 13-10 away in mid-November.
