WELLINGTON Reserves play their last home game of the season in the Premier Division of the Devon & Exeter Football League when they meet Crediton United Reserves tomorrow ()Sat, April 19).
The game kicks off at 3pm and there will be a barbecue afterwards. The Reserves end their season with a trip to Lyme Regis on Saturday, April 26.
Meanwhile, the Reserves moved up into second place in the table - thanks to a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Feniton under the Playing Field lights on Wednesday.
The game got off to a scrappy start with both teams flying into tackles all over the park and it needed the referee to call over the captains to calm things down. His comments seemed to work as both teams tried to play football but, with the respective defences in control, chances were few and far between.
Then, after 25 minutes, the ball was played forward and, as Alfie Barratt battled with two defenders, he managed to fend them off and hit a unstoppable shot over the keeper’s head from just inside the box.
Wellington kept pushing for a second down the hill but were restricted to long-range shots and the half ended 1-0.
The second half started with Feniton pushing for an equaliser but Wellington held firm and then started to create some chances on the break but could not beat the visitors’ keeper.
With the game entering the final 20 minutes, Wellington keeper Tom Hawkings pulled off a fine save. The Feniton forward’s header seemed to be looping into the top corner but he reacted to claw the ball around the post and keep the lead intact. Then, on 75 minutes, Ben Evett picked the ball up on the right wing and, as he cut into the box skipping past the left back, he hit a shot low and across the keeper into the bottom corner – an outstanding goal and just what Wellington needed.
All the lads needed to do was see out the rest of the game which they did and the game ended 2-0.
