WELLINGTON Reserves produced an excellent display to run out 3-0 winners against University of Exeter 2nds at the Playing Field on Wednesday evening.
The defeat more or less ended the university’s Premier Division title hopes in the Stitch2 Print Devon & Exeter Football League, but Welly can still aim at a top three finish after this success.
The home side were bright from the first whistle with Ben Evett firing just over the bar after being fed by Josh Baker.
They continued to press and were rewarded in the 11th minute when Jack Bryant’s shot was deflected for a corner.
The ball landed at his feet from the flag kick and he finished clinically.
It was just reward for their positive start and they doubled their tally a couple of minutes later when Alfie Barratt robbed a defender.
He advanced on goal and found the back of the net with ease.
Baker went close again moments later after good work by Evett, the visiting keeper producing a top-notch save to keep his side in it.
The visitors were denied by the woodwork just after the half hour mark but they were given a boost when Aaron Hawkings was sin binned on 35 minutes.
They nearly made their numerical advantage count before the break, but the bar came to Wellington’s rescue again.
Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the second half with Wellington looking for a killer third goal to secure the points.
Baker was denied by a point blank save on 80 minutes but the home side were given an opportunity to seal the deal when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jack Bryant on 89 minutes.
Substitute Jordan Sellick stepped and powered home the spot kick in style.
