WELLINGTON Reserves scored three times playing up the slope in the second half to beat Crediton United Reserves before a big crowd at the Playing Field in the Premier Division of the Devon & Exeter Football League.
Man of the Match Jack Bryant was on target twice for Wellington, with the home side’s other goal being scored by Alfie Barratt.
Victory enabled Wellington to stay second in the table, although they are some way behind leaders and title favourites Lapford. The only other side in contention are University of Exeter Reserves who have games in hand on Lapford.
Wellington A ended their season in the Premier Division of the Taunton Saturday League with a surprise 3-2 away win over Wembdon who will finish runners-up.
Connor Porter, Max Muggleton-Browning and James King scored for Wellington who led 3-1 at one stage in the second half.
“We played some good football,” said Wellington’s assistant manager Warren Toth. “It was a really good team performance.”
Galmington have won the division, finishing 14 points clear of Wembdon with Staplegrove Reserves third, one point behind.
Meanwhile, Wellington Reds’ hopes of reaching the final of the Somerset Intermediate Cup were dashed when they slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Odd Down (Bath) in a tie which was switched to the all-weather pitch at Court Fields School.
It was to have been played on the small pitch at the Playing Field but was moved because of heavy rain in the previous 24 hours. This was always going to be a tough game for the Reds because Odd Down top Division Two in the Mid Somerset League, having lost only one game.
Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, trailed 1-0 at the interval but then had a player sent off after being yellow-carded twice. Odd Down went on to dominate playing some stylish football.
