WELLINGTON Reds are up to second in Division One of the Taunton Saturday League after beating Alcombe Rovers 3-1 away - their fourth victory over the West Somerset outfit this season.
Always well organised, Alcombe started well but the game was back and forth, Alcombe having the majority of the possession but the better chances falling to the Reds.
A harsh early sinbin for the Reds saw them temporarily reduced to ten men. Shortly after Alcombe won a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Up stepped Alcombe’s captain, the free kick was miss hit but took a deflection before going in.
The Reds got themselves together and battled well until half time, getting a well deserved goal back through the in form Tyler Fyfe.
The Reds now had the momentum and Alcombe went into half time with their heads down and rattled. The hairdryer treatment at half time from the Alcombe management team did little to spur their team on. Alcombe still with the majority of the possession, lacked creativity and composure in front of goal.
The Reds held tight and broke through and the returning Ben Evett put them deservedly ahead. Now chasing the game, Alcombe started to look desperate, receiving a sin bin of their own as they took their frustration out on the referee.
With 10 minutes to go a mistake in midfield saw the Reds run through the Alcombe defence and Evett notched his second, leaving the keeper stranded with no chance with what would be a goal of the season contender.
Seeing out the game with the same grit and determination they have shown all season, the Reds were worthy winners.
Reds face Odd Down Developmental in the semi-finals of the Somerset Intermediate Cup at the Playing Field on Saturday, April 19 (2p.m.), hoping to make it into their second final.
