A LAST-MINUTE penalty robbed Wellington of the point they deserved as they went down 2-1 at Brislington in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.
After successive 4-0 home defeats, the Tangerines looked to have done enough to start a run of four away games with a draw.
They got off to a dream start by taking the lead in the fourth minute after Miles Quick’s diving header had been diverted round the post by keeper George Derrington.
When the corner was floated over to the near post, defender Tom Stone rose to meet the ball with force, giving Derrrington no chance.
Both sides created chances in the first half with Jordan Scadding dragging the hosts’ best opportunity wide after19 minutes.
At the other end, Miles Quick and Sam Towler were both denied by Derrington’s legs as Wellington went into the break leading 1-0.
Tangerines keeper Jack McAndrews kept it that way shortly after the restart with a superb flying pushover but the game deteriorated into a scrappy affair with the ball spending too much time in the air.
Brislington kept pushing for an equaliser and it arrived in controversial circumstances with 15 minutes remaining.
Wellington gave away possession and the ball was scrambled into the net, only for the assistant referee to raise his flag for offside. However, after consulting with the official, the referee awarded the goal.
Both sides pressed for the winner until Wellington failed to clear their lines again right at the death, resulting it a foul by Stone with the ref immediately pointing to the spot. Shea Mannings stepped up to blast home the penalty.
