WELLINGTON side Moortown went down 6-3 at home to Mariners in the Somerset Sunday League’s Jim Jowett Cup.
Mariners went ahead early on after a mix-up In the Moortown defence. Moortown then lost Jake Nichol who was replaced by 16-year -old Ryan Conway, making his debut. Ben Evett then struck a superb free kick around the Mariners wall into the bottom corner.
The game then swung when Mariners were awarded a hotly disputed penalty. Expecting to be given a free kick himself, Joey Conway saw the referee point to the spot. The penalty was struck home with power.
Ten minutes later Mariners were awarded a second penalty which was put away well to end the first half. The second half started with Moortown on top creating a number of good chances before Evett struck another scintillating free kick over the Mariners ‘wall’ into the top corner.
With twenty minutes remaining Moortown equalised following a move down the left. Bradski Holmans played a fine pass to Ryan Conway who produced an perfect cross to Joey Conway who drove home.
Moortown, however, lost the tie in the last ten minutes when Mariners snapped up three goals.
