WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, are through to the quarter-finals of the Somerset Intermediate Cup after a brilliant display.

In one of the only matches which did not get called off over the weekend, the Reds took on Misterton Reserves in the last 16 of the competition on the small pitch at the Playing Field.

Unsure what to expect from Misterton the Reds, who play in the first division of the West Country Drainage Services Taunton and District Saturday League, fielded a strong team. The deadlock was quickly broken early on when Tyler Fyfe broke through and rounded the keeper, and the lead was doubled not long after when Fyfe lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box.

A couple of Jack Lewis goals before half time saw the Reds go in 4-1 up and looking set for a comfortable victory. Fyfe and Lewis both completed their hat-tricks in the second half with Lewis going on to notch a fabulous five goals on the day. The final score of 9-2 saw the Reds into the hat for quarter finals for the very first time.

It is proving to be a fine season for the Reds who are lying third in Division One of the Saturday League with games in hand on both the teams above them.

Middlezoy Rovers Athletic top the table with 29 points from 15 matches while second-placed Dunwear United are only one point behind them with two games in hand. Reds have 25 points from only 11 fixtures, four less than the leaders.

Reds should be able to step up the pressure at the top of the table this coming weekend, Saturday, February 22, when they play away to Galmington Reserves who have won only one of their matches this season and are bottom of the table.
