WELLINGTON’S new overseas cricketer, Sri Lankan Lakshan Edrisinghe, will arrive in this country at the weekend.

The 32-year-old left-hand batter and off-spinner is an experienced player, having made his first-class debut back in 2013.

Meanwhile, Wellington have been working on the wicket at the Playing Field for the past six weeks.

Des Campbell, who has begun his seventh year as the club’s groundsman, said: “The square is looking good. We now have to get the outfield right with the help of the local council.”

The Wellington council took over the ownership of the Playing Field from the county council at the beginning of this month.

Meanwhile Wellington, whose first team warm-up match at Minehead last weekend was cancelled because of rain, continue their build-up to the new season with two friendlies this weekend, weather permitting. The first team, who will be captained again this summer by all-rounder Arron Campbell, play at Bideford on Saturday, April 26, while a mixture of second and third team players will be involved in a match at Street on Sunday.

Wellington, relegated from the Bristol/Somerset Division at the end of last season, begin life in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League the following Saturday with an away game against North Perrott. The 2nd XI are home to Middlezoy in Division Two of the Somerset League while the thirds are away to Staplegrove in Division 7 Red.
