WELLINGTON play their opening match of the season in the Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League away to Taunton Deane in a derby clash at the Convent Field on Saturday (May 4, 12.00).
The sides were separated by two divisions last season but the Deane were relegated from the Premier Division after finishing bottom with only three wins, while Wellington were promoted after winning the Somerset Division without losing a game.
The Bristol/Somerset division will consist of the following sides: Clevedon, Congresbury, Downend, Golden Hill, Ilminster, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Taunton Deane, Wellington and Weston super Mare.
Wellington were unbeaten in the Somerset Division last season under skipper Arron Campbell, but this will be a big step up for his all-conquering side. Fellow all-rounder Luke Desave continues as vice-captain which will bt out to do well in a very competitive division.
Wellington have recruited another Sri Lankan overseas player this year. Sachindu Colombage joins the club with a similar playing pedigree to Sandaken 'Dilly' Patherans who proved a big hit last summer - both on and off the field. He proved particularly devastating early on in the summer when he was Newton the opposition.
Opening games in the division are: Golden Hill v Clevedon, Ilminster v Congresbury, Keynsham v Weston super Mare, Midsomer Norton v Downend, and Taunton Deane v Wellington.
One of Wellington's strengths last season was their ability to fight back when in trouble. There were times last season when they looked in trouble - but there was always someone there to come to the rescue. This was a feature of many of their games.
Wellington's first home game of the season will be on Saturday week - at home to Midsomer Norton who finished seventh last season.
There is also a full programme of games in the Somerset and West Somerset Leagues this weekend.
